Replacing a White-Rodgers thermostat with a Honeywell digital thermostat?
Have a new Honeywell thermostat model number RTH2310B, it has five wires as following: RH, RC, W,Y,G. My current thermostat is a White-Rodgers, with 3 wires numbered 4, 5 and 6. How do I hook up the wires on the Honeywell?
It is a gas fired base board hot water. heating system with 4 zones. The zone valves are White Rodgers Zone valves and are controlled by individual thermostats. Some thermostats have red green white wires while others have red green and blue. The zone valves only have terminal numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 no letters.
The zone valves vary from 16 to 39 years of age. Same for the original thermostats.
Called Honeywell Customer Service once they were open. This valve will not operate the system. However, their RTH6300B and RTH6400D thermostats do. They gave me the mapping from the 4, 5 and 6 terminals to the R, G and W terminals on the new thermostat. Installed the 6300B yesterday and it works fine.
In THEORY, you can go by the colors of the wires coming from the wall. But there is a chance the installer did not go by the color code. If you want to try it, this is what you need to know:
Wires from the wall - to new thermostat
Red - RH with jumper to RC
White - W
Yellow - Y
Green - G
It may be that the old thermostat only controlled one system (cool or heat and not both). Either way IF the color code was followed the above will work. Otherwise, edit your question with the colors of the 4,5 and 6 wires. Good luck...
