Air Conditioning Inspection Penalties And Benefits
The legal requirement for air-conditioning systems to be regularly inspected by an Energy Assessor is, like any other statutory measure, backed up by penalties for non compliance. There may well be business barriers put in the way too if you want to sell or let a building with air-conditioning. The potential buyer or tenant will probably require sight of the report prior to exchange of contracts and if you don’t have one, that could kill the deal.
That’s why it makes sense now to look at new units, especially systems using R-22 that are not worth the effort or expense to maintain. Modern systems are not only much more energy efficient and environmentally friendly, they tend to be more economical and simpler to use too. Trane air conditioning scooped a design and engineering award for its ComfortLink II thermostat control panel which features a colour touch screen. Simpler to operate, easier to understand and more stylish to boot! Airedale air conditioning products use EC (Electronically Commutated) fans which are at least 70% more efficient than conventional AC fans and hence use less energy, saving cost and the planet into the bargain.
Local authorities (usually via Trading Standards Officers) will be responsible for enforcing the requirements relating to air-conditioning inspection reports. Failure to commission, keep, or provide an air conditioning inspection report means you may be issued with a penalty charge notice. Trading Standards Officers may also request you provide them with a copy of your inspection report at any time and like MOTs, you should keep all reports so that they can be referred to in subsequent inspections. You are also obliged to keep an up to date building log-book together with ongoing maintenance or energy records. If asked, you must provide this information within seven days of the request or be liable to a penalty charge of £300 for failing to do so.
Thermostat control on hot water heat with boiler?
Our house has hot water heat with a boiler, baseboards and all of that good stuff.
My question is: With this type of heating, should I lower the temp at night and when I am gone, or should I leave it at a constant temperature? I would like to see references to sites or books, not just "because I said so."
"They" say that if you lower your thermostat more than 10 degrees, it costs more to bring it back up to temp, but I assume it is referring to air forced heat. So, maybe the change should be less for water?! I don't know.
It takes more time to heat the house back up with hot water baseboard. First, the mass of water has to be heated up to temperature, usually 160-180F. Then the radiation has to occur. This takes more time than forced air.
You should lower your thermostat at night, maybe 5 degrees F or so. You may have to experiment with turning it down when you go to work, etc.
Most newer thermostats have "Intelligent Recovery" which turns on the heat well before the time the thermostat actually is set for. This makes the house much more closer to the setpoint before you get home. Make sure your thermostat is set for this if you have it.
Also, your thermostat may have an "anticipator" setting for forced air, hot water, heat pump, etc. Make sure this is set correctly.
Every house and every system is different. Experiment with your setback to see which is best. 10 degrees is a good starting point.
