1990 Jetta starts, then idles, then dies?
i have a 1990 jetta with the 1.8 8V 5-speed. I recently replaced the thermostat, the coolant temperature sensor and the engine coolant flange. i did this because the car "overheated". i say "overheated" because it really didn't. the dash said it did but it even said that after just turning it on.well, when i replaced that i started the car and it ran. I then took the spark plugs off to check then and re-gap them. I also took off the MAF(mass air flow sensor) and cleaned it with MAF cleaner of course. Two dead bees and a good amount of dirt came out. After i did all that, I tried to start the car and it idle for 2 second then died, if I even touch the gaspedale it dies sooner. Any thoughts or suggestions will be highly appreciated. THANKS!
Is there a check engine light? Sometimes MAF sensors just can't be cleaned, and should be replaced. I would double check the gap again. You can consider the inline fuel filter if it has one, but it sounds like the problem is incorrect plug gap.
