Tips for Repairing Your Air Conditioner
Consider this scenario: It's July, your air conditioner just died, and you're hesitant to pay several hundred dollars to have a repairman come fix it. Well, before you start thumbing through the Yellow Pages to find a company that can repair your unit, there may be a few things you can do repair your air conditioning system yourself.
First, you'll need to get out the owner's manual that came with your air conditioning unit. Whenever you get an item like an air conditioner installed, be sure to keep the manual and any other documents related to the unit to use as a reference, in case there are problems. If you can't find the manual or didn't keep it, look online for the information from the manufacturer's website. Many companies, such as Kenmore or Lennox, will have what you need on the web. The manufacturer can also be contacted so you can get a new manual before beginning the self repair process.
Before you begin checking the unit for problems, make sure that it is completely off. You can shut off the unit on the electrical panel, or go to the outdoor compressor of your home and find the disconnect or "off" button located there. Also take the time to clean any debris around the system so while you are cleaning no parts get dirty or damaged as you inspect it. Take the protective grill off the unit, and with a soft brush remove any dirt and grime that may have collected inside. A brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner works great for this as well.
After you've removed the grill, be careful not to disturb any wires inside the unit. You may even need to hose off the fins, if they're especially dirty. It may be necessary to lube up the motor in your air conditioner, but never put on too much.
After you've completed these tasks, you can put the unit back together. Be sure to put all the parts together in the same order you took them apart. You can then turn the unit back on to test it, and set the thermostat to the desired temperature. Allow the unit to run for a bit longer while you check the pipes and make sure they are connected properly to the condenser unit. One pipe should be cool, and the other should be warm. This way your house will have a balanced temperature through the whole home. However, if the pipes are both warm or both cool, and remain that way for several minutes after you've done your repairs, it may be necessary to contact a repairman to take a further look at the problem.
When the temperature rises to the point where living indoors becomes unbearable, there is a real need to cool things down so you can work, relax and sleep. A home air conditioning system is the best way to handle the situation. Find out what you need to know to keep your cool at the Residential Air Conditioning site.
How do you reset a digital control panel for the air conditioning/ heating system?
Our control panel seems to be "dead". We checked all the breakers and they are fine, but we cannot adjust the AC because the control panel in the house is not working.....Does anyone know if we can reset this??? or what may be wrong? The panel in the house is a Bryant.
I bet it's either battery powered or you have a bad control fuse or transformer in the indoor unit.
