Fish Oil for Fitness and Health
The mention of oils and fats will make some health-conscious individuals run for cover. What they fail to realize is that there are good fats and bad fats. Complete avoidance of intake of oils and fats would actually be detrimental – rather than beneficial – to their health.
The Truth about Fish Oil
Essential fatty acids must always be part of our daily diet – without them, we take one step closer to our deaths. Essential fatty acids can be divided into two groups: omega-3 EFAS and omega-6 EFAs.
There are only minor differences in the two groups of essential fatty acids, however studies show that too much omega-6 EFAs may lead to blood clotting, inflammation and tumor growth. The good news, however, is that the opposite is true for omega-3 EFAs. Omega-6 EFAs can be found in vegetable oils while omega-3 EFAs can be found in fish oils among other foods.
Omega-6 vs. Omega-3
Scientists and doctors share the opinion that the increase of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, premature aging, obesity, and certain cancers are caused by an imbalanced intake of the essential omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs.
As mentioned earlier on, omega-6 EFAs can be found in vegetable oils. This includes corn oil and soy oil among others, which contain high amounts of linoleic acid. Omega-3 EFAs on the other hand can be found also in marine plankton and walnut and flaxseed oils. It should be significant to take note that fatty fish and fish oils contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), fatty acids that have been observed to provide many benefits to the human body. In the early 1970’s, a study on Greenland Eskimos have revealed that one of the major reasons why they rarely suffer from heart diseases is because of their high-fat diet (mainly composed of fish).
EPA and DHA, two essential fatty acids are helpful in preventing depression, some forms of cancer, heart attacks, and atherosclerosis. Fish oil supplemented food have also proven to be useful in treating illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, Raynaud’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Other Benefits of Fish Oil
There are a lot more illnesses and situations in which intake of fish oil has proven to be significantly beneficial.
Making the Heart Healthier
The heart is certainly the most important part of the body and when the heart is diseased it can mean a limited lifespan. Naturally, it’s in our best interests to keep our hearts happy and healthy and one way of doing that is eating food that contains fish oil.
A study in Athens Greece showed a direct relationship between inflammation of blood vessels and high fish diets. The results revealed that those who ate more fish than the others had a lower level of C-reactive protein and interleukin-6, factors that are commonly used to measure likelihood of blood vessel inflammation. These benefits remained even when the various risks associated with high fish diet were taken into account.
Fish for Weight Loss
In Perth, Australia, a study had revealed that fish consumption can be used against hypertension and obesity. Researchers of the UWA (University of Western Australia) have discovered that a weight-loss diet which includes a regular amount of fish consumption can be quite effective in reducing blood pressure and improving glucose tolerance.
Fish Oil and Asthma
People suffering from respiratory problems like asthma tend to be perceived as unfit and unhealthy. They should now be pleased to learn that certain studies have revealed the benefits of fish oil for asthma-burdened-individuals. Statistics show that approximately 20 to 25% of children today suffer one form of asthma or another at a certain point in their lives. Some evidence shows a diet high in linoletic acid as the reason for it.
Researchers at the University of Wyoming conducted a study which subjected a number of children to a diet high in fish while others ate a regular diet. The results shows that participants who consumed more fish were able to breathe more easily and were less prone to asthma attachs as well.
Speak With Your Nutritionist
Nothing is good when consumed or used excessively but complete avoidance of a particular food type is equally harmful as well. Consult with your nutritionist regarding the correct amount of fish for your health status and age. Give fish oil a try and see the benefits to your health. You can try fish oil for free and discover for yourself if it works for you.
How much does it cost to replace an oil pressure switch on a 2003 Buick Century?
Had an oil leak so I took it to the mechanic and he said it was the oil pressure switch and he would do it for about $75-$100 for parts and labor. I looked up the part at Autozone and it is only $10. Should I do it myself? Is he overcharging me? I head it is easy to do.
The switch is on the front of the motor right above the starter. The book only calls for a half an hour of labor, and GM lists the part at only $20 (cheap!). So say even if he was buying official GM parts and charging $100/hr for labor, you're still only at $70. I'd personally get on my back and grab that thing with a pair of pliers and turn it out of there. Just make sure to wrap the threads on the new one with some teflon tape or some pipe dope, otherwise the leak might even be worse.
Going with the flow (MIT)
_Since the 1970s, when early autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) were
developed at MIT, Institute scientists have tackled various barriers to robots
that can travel autonomously in the deep ocean. This four-part series examines
current MIT efforts to refine AUVs’ artificial intelligence, navigation,
stability and tenacity._
Anyone who has steered a boat knows how much effort is needed to keep the boat
on course when currents are pushing it in different directions. Now, MIT
researchers have developed sensors that can measure the pressure of flows
around an oceangoing vessel so that it can utilize rather than fight those
flows, saving energy and improving maneuverability. Other work aims to go a
step further: to change flows from patterns that impede progress to patterns
that will help.
Flows around autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and other vessels — from
ships to submarines — can significantly affect their performance. For example,
when a vessel going 20 miles per hour turns sharply, it pushes into the
current on one side and creates swirling eddies on the other; as a result, its
speed can drop suddenly to seven miles per hour. The behavior of control
surfaces such as rudders and propellers can also be ...
