1988 Mazda: intermittent ignition cut-out at low speeds. Any ideas?
I have a 1988 Mazda 323, so it does not have much in emission controls. It has been cutting out at idle, but also for a few seconds at low speeds. This does not happen all the time, but is getting worse. The 'cut out' is perfectly smooth, like I had turned off the ignition - no kicks or bumps or sputtering. It comes back on just as smoothly, unless the car's speed is very low. Then it stops, again very smoothly. I only 'notice' that the accelerator no longer works, and then notice the engine and oil lights are on: that it has stopped.
Thank you for any ideas!
your description seems to suggest eledctrical
look for crappy connections at the ignition switch (may be cutting juice to the ignition intermittently)
then look at the coil. old coils can leak out their oil and fail intermittently. while youre there, test the coil to see if the windings in it have collapsed. a new coil is a cheap fix here.
when was the ignition system last serviced, cause after that it becomes a game of chasing ghosts
