Indoor Air Quality And Health Problems

Unless you are living in the wilds somewhere in some remote area, you are undoubtedly affected by indoor air pollution. You'd be surprised at the amazing variety of pollutants in the air in your home or office. One obvious reaction to air pollution is that of people allergic to pollen, animal dander or dust-mites.

Along with lead, pesticides, tobacco smoke and drinking water contamination, air pollution is one of most threatening health risks. This shows how important air pollution is today and indoor air pollution is becoming more important since many of us spend so much time indoors. Let's take a look at the ways we can address this problem. The first obvious way is to make sure your home is ventilated properly. Many countries have such cold weather that ventilation is frowned upon. Hay fever sufferers may want to avoid the outside air during the pollen season and so, ventilation may be inappropriate.

An integrated solution for your entire house is to install an air purification system into your furnace or air conditioning system. One problem with this solution is that it assumes that all the contaminated air is coming from your furnace or air conditioning system which is not always the case.

You'll never be able to have clean air if you add more new pollutants to your home. Avoid making any kind of smoke: it's really bad for your health. If you look at the labels, you'll see how many toxic chemicals are in most household products. You can make most household products yourself from natural materials. You can find books about it and also information on the internet.

Air pollution can come in the form of particles and gases.  Dust and pollen are two examples of particles. Germs like bacteria and viruses are also included.

Many people who purchase air purifiers see the amount of dust being collected in the unit as a sign of efficiency. However, it is actually the invisible particles collected that are more important than the visible. Our nose removes most of the visible particles before they ever reach our lungs. The most health-threatening particles are the invisible ones that can easily penetrate into the lungs.

The two main types of cleaner that can remove particles are HEPA filters and electrostatic filters. Any air purifier can only clean down to a certain particle size. This is what you need to know. You should also pay attention to the fact that even though you may be allergic to particles bigger than 10 microns, particles equal to or less than 10 microns (known as PM10) are definitely a health hazard because they can penetrate to the deepest parts of your lungs. Particles in the air can aggravate asthma symptoms and can even cause bronchitis.

Any kind of burning will create gases or volatile organic compounds. So, gases could come from gas cookers, lighted candles and cigarette smoking. Many products in the home give off volatile organic compounds. Examples are furnishings, paints and lacquers, cleaning products and cosmetics.

Gaseous pollutants are less than 0.001 microns. Mechanical filters such as HEPA are not effective in capturing such minute pollutants. A chemical process is necessary. The process employed is adsorption which essentially means the gases bond to the surface of the material used to capture them. The most common material used is activated carbon. Other materials used are potassium permanganate and zeolite.

Quite often air purifiers will have a carbon pre-filter and state that it removes odors. Nonetheless, such filters usually are too thin for any serious gas removal.

Indoor air pollution is an extremely serious matter and can cause serious diseases like cancer and heart problems. Of course, it also causes many less severe problems. Maybe it's a minor eye, throat or nose irritation..
