i have been working on some window airconditioners. some of the same type same model come in with?
some have tall grey circular 15 ufd capacitors which tells me they are starting caps but aren't starting caps 100 ufd or larger? others come in with short oval caps same rating 15 ufd these should be run caps right. one cap is for the blower and one is for the compressor. the only info i can get just gives the rating not the type?
all single phase [as opposed to 3 phase] compressors have run capacitors that are in the circuit when the compressor starts and the whole time it runs...you're right about a start capacitor being a much higher uf,,usually 80uf or above..some central ac units [ i dont work on window units much] used to have thermisters,called "soft start" devices..they were wired in parallel with the run capacitor to assist in starting..when cold their resistence was low,giving the same starting assistance of a 40uf capacitor,then they would quickly heat up,resistance went up,thereby taking them out of the circuit....all start capacitors have to have a relay or a thermister to take them out of the circuit after the compressor starts,,usually happens in less than 1 second..so any capacitor that is wired straight between "start" and "run" with nothing to take it out of the circuit is a run capacitor...keep in mind they are called "run" capacitors because they stay in the circuit while the compressor is running.but they do help the compressor start also,as evidenced by the fact that that most compressors wont start with a bad run capacitor unless it also happens to have a start capacitor too..in that case it will start ok,but then draw high run amps......dan
