What should I use for an air compressor?
I've Been doing a lot of bodywork lately and run a 6" da sander I think it's rated at 10 or 13 cfm and my craftsman air compressor just can't keep up. I have an industrial baldor motor that's 2hp 1725 rpm it's a $1500 motor according to baldors site and it runs smooth and great. Do you guys think I can use that motor with the compressor I have? Or should I get a bigger 2 cylinder compressor? (by the way I have two I'd say medium sized tanks that are tied together) if I need a new compressor for that size motor what type should I get (best for the price I'm sorta on a budget)
For your use, running body work air tools, its all about compressor and compressing capacity. Having a 2hp motor around is great, but if memory serves correctly, it's already a 3 phase motor. If you might not have sufficient power from the pole to run the thing. (it could burn it up running it on one phase) I know you said it runs smooth & great, but that is without a load on it....
What I would do is make SURE you can properly power the thing, then go to somewhere like Tractor Supply or Northern Tool & Equipment and snag about a 350cc compressor pump. Then perhaps get two old 40 gallon water heater tanks and disassemble them (strip 'em), set them in the corner, bolt them together. Fabricate a steel skid for the motor and pump that can be adjusted for the belt sheaves, then start plumbing it all with about 3/4" copper and sweat fittings. You will need a pressure cut out solenoid.
You may need to consult Machinery's Handbook to work out the sheave sizes on the pump vs motor......belts, etc....
Doing it this way should, believe it or not, save you at least some money while creating a compressor system that rivals anything that comes off the production lines at Ingersoll-Rand at less than half the cost.
