Can a fish tank be cycled without a filter, i have a filter on all my tanks but it just never crossed my mind?
Is it possibly to cycle a tank without a filter if so how, by the way I have filters for all my tanks but I'm just curious, if it's possible, please explain.
Yes, I think theoretically it should be possible, but I don't know why anyone would. It may be difficult if there is no movement of water to increase the oxygen level. You could possibly use store bought cultures to do this? I have no idea why anyone would want to though as they would have to change the water before if finished cycling and it is very dangerous for the fish.
I don't know if this is what you were asking but i am guessing that if you provided a "home" for the bacteria of some type in the tank such as a course sponge thingy for example and you used a air pump to provide a current through it then it should work. It is not technically a filter as it is just a air pump...
Or perhaps the answer is no because to cycle means the development of three types of bacteria. These bacteria provide biological filtration of ammonia, nitrate and nitrite and therefor are a filter themselves.
