Not Changing Your Air Filter Can Be Desasterous - Don't Become A Statistic
Everybody has heard the terrifying story of the family who just barely escaped with their lives, or maybe worse the family who died in their sleep, there lives stopped by a silent killer. The silent killer is CO. If you do not change or maintain your furnace filter as suggested by the maker you could be putting your family at risk. Your furnace filter is designed to remove dust from air as it passes thru your furnace. The longer your furnace filter is in use the dirtier it becomes. This increased loading of the filter with allergens causes a resistance to air movement through the filter and restricts air circulation.
Natural gas furnaces, like all heating and air conditioning equipment, are built to have a specific quantity of air circulation at all times to work properly. This air flow is measured in cubic feet per minute. This equipment utilizes a heat exchanger that has the heat source, flame, inside and the air moves over the heat exchanger on the outside. As the air flows around the heat exchanger it picks up the heat from the flame inside.
To get the best efficiency from these heating systems, the heat exchanger walls are made as thin as possible but not so thin that they can not take the heat that they are subject to during normal operation.
An air filter that remains in the system so long that it starts to adversely impact air movement can be a problem. As the amount of air flowing around the heat exchanger
declines, the operating temperature of the heat exchanger will increase. This is when a heat exchanger can crack because it is working above design conditions. The warmer the heat exchanger gets the more it expands when heating, and contracts as it cools during the off cycle. This expanding and contracting can become excessiveexcessive and cause the metal of the heat exchanger to warp or crack. A cracked heat exchanger could cause CO to mix with the air in your house.
Fortunately, properly designed furnaces have High Limit safety devices that eliminate extream heating of the heat exchanger. These high limit devices monitor the temperature at or close to the heat exchanger and if the temperature reaches a predetermined set point, the equipment will shut down either till manually reset or until the switch senses that the temp
A furnace can function a long while on an auto reset limit switch without anybody even being aware. This means that the furnace is operating at the boundaries of its design capabilities. Today, most safety switches must be reset by hand. They are designed this way so that the furnace won't operate until it is serviced and the issue fixed.
Don't depend on these safety switches to save you from disaster. These are manufactured devices which can and do fail to operate properly on occasion . So reduce your risk by changing your furnace filter regularly. It is always best to follow manufacturers reccomendations.

The air filter lid that is secured by 4 phillips screws has cracked and will no longer remain in place. What is the part number for this lid? This lid goes on top of the air filter with an intake hose clamped on to it.

I would suggest going to the junk yard and seeing if they have the same type of car and just get it from there. It's alot cheaper.
