For all you tech savvy carpenters out there, we recently recieved a note from one of our customers who created a homemade kiosk used for check-in every week. The kiosk runs N-Spire’s "Scan Console", used for collecting barcode attendance. He uses 3 Mac computers (running virtual pc) that are hooked up to a wireless network. He made a cabinet assembly to hold the monitor and computer. The cabinet doors lock to secure the computer. He mounted a USB CCD barcode scanner to the front of the cabinet with the monitor. All of the cords run neatly to a hole in the back to connect to the computer. People scan themselves in when they come into the building. We are working on getting a picture of the homemade kiosk, which we will post here as soon as we receive it.

We have done a very similar thing with our youth login.

We have a 22″ LCD screen mounted onto our youth notice board with a Laser omni-directional barcode scanner mounted next to it. (situated at the entrance to our building) The cables go though the wall to a networked PC. We have a wireless mouse and keyboard which we use to start up and change the events on the scan console. Surrounding the LCD are youth notices, pictures, and other Youth info.

This PC also has the screen saver set to show images from a folder. We make up jpg slides of our notices and photos from previous weeks so that when people are not signing in the LCD is displaying next weeks notices and photos of previous weeks.

Opposite the LCD in the foyer we have our registration desk. Here we have a real person signing up new people who come to our events and also manually signing in people who forget their cards (BRING ON THE BIOMETRIC!!!!!). We also have one other machine located in the building which small group leaders utilise during the evening to update any info using their own login.

Works great!!!!

Our children’s ministry use a bar code wand and a sign in and out process. Parents bring their kids and swipe their barcode on the desk with the wand. They too have a networked laptop for registration of new people.
